The Philip Island Circuit is a race venue with a turbulent history. The first race held here was back in 1928. Riders used the local airfield to test the limits of their bikes and to test their own skills. The bumpy site was covered with dust and all sizes of flying stones, making the track extremely dangerous.
Thanks to technical innovations bikes were getting much better and faster over the years, which made it even more risky to join. For this reason the Philip Island government and the international racing bodies implemented new legislation, forcing Philip Island Circuit to take some safety precautions. Subsequently, the track was replaced and the corners were flattened. Despite this, the 1962 Armstrong 500 managed to cause serious damage to the track. The owners were unable to fund the required repairments.
In the time laps between 1966 and 1989, Philip Island had a bumpy ride itself: it was redeveloped, reopened, damaged again and closed down again. In 1985 a private investment corporation promised to renovate the track. Finally, they finished their job in 1989 with the reopening of the facelifted venue. The updated Australian track in Victoria organised a spectacular opening with the introduction of the first MotoGP race at Philip Island. Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit stages Australia's first round of the 500cc World Motorcycle Championship on April 6-9. In an emotional victory in front of a crowd of 90 000 plus, the race was won by the world champion, Wayne Gardner.
Good for you to know is that the race track of Philip Island is located within a beautiful amphitheatre which guarantees great views. Apart from spectacular racing inside a visit to the Yamaha Philip Island Round also promises the joy of spectacular circuit surroundings.

Important traffic information during the MotoGP of Australia
During events like Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, traffic becomes particularly heavy. So please leave early to be at the venue in time. The main road on the island (Phillip Island Road, running between the towns of Newhaven and Cowes) normally operates with two lanes. To aid efficient flow of traffic, a blue line on the road comes into effect adding an extra lane. Reduced speed limits are applied during these times.
