MotoGP Tickets Portugal

The MotoGP of Portugal will be hosted by Circuito do Estoril. The former host of the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix joined the MotoGP calendar in 2000, a welcome addition to the three Spanish rounds. The first MotoGP race at Estoril was won by Garry McCoy. The Portuguese track, a short drive out of the capital Lisbon, also joined the testing calendar at the same time. Teams who joined the mass tests there before the start of the year quickly found out about one of the track’s special features – very high coastal winds off the nearby Atlantic ocean making a difficult lap more difficult still. It is one the reasons why the circuit of Estoril is one of the slowest circuits on the MotoGP calendar when you look at the average speed per lap, with a lap record averaging just 153 km/h (95 mph). In terms of maximum speed, only Mugello saw the MotoGP bikes go any faster than the 341.8 km/h (212.4 mph) recorded by Max Biaggi’s Honda.

Circuito do Estoril was opened in 1972 and was very popular only until 1977. The circuit dissapeared from most international race calendars. However, in 1980 Cesar Torres would change Estoril's history permanently with the introduction of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal. He saw the opportunities to use the beautiful located track in order to attract more tourists to Estoril. He succeeded: In 1984 the circuit proudly presented the F1 race. Unfortunately the FIA was extremely critical, constantly requesting changes of the venue. Circuito do Estoril ignored the requests, which cased them to lose the important event in 1997. The government of Portugal promised to invest 6 million euros to update the track, but they never suited the action to the word. A year later Ceasr Torres died and that seemed to be the end of the F1 battle.

Luckily for the circuit of Estoril, Portugal the FIM approved the track to host a MotoGP round in 2000. The race has been on the MotoGP calendar ever since. The race is popular amoungst all kinds of race fans. Due to the bautiful surroundings and perfect weather, it is the perfect race to combine with a short holiday. Did you know that this is one of the main reasons why the race is always scheduled late in the season? Most of the MotoGP riders want to stay some extra days in Estoril, being able to complete lose the stress of the actual race. It is well possible that you will run into riders, when celebrating your racing adventure in Estoril, Portugal!
